Then several of them grabbed my hands and helped me climb all the way up onto the roof. Once I got all the way up to the top, it was absolute heaven. Everyone was smiling, shaking my hand, saying hello, and trying to talk to me in English with their amazing accents. One of them handed me what I later learned was a beedi cigarette and lit it for me. Not a smoker, I was so intoxicated with the moment that I said “what the hell”. It felt like I had officially arrived in India. THIS was exactly why I had come. The sun was setting. The hills were lush and green, the people were all incredibly friendly, the scenery was absolutely amazing, and LIFE WAS GOOD!
