The genus of the Giraffe is a genus of mammals of the Chok tribe, the tallest terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant. It is classified in the Giraffidae family, along with its closest surviving relative, the Zebra deer. The genus has 11 species, including typical species Giraffa camelopardalis. Of these, seven extinct prehistoric species are known from fossils, while four are still alive. Although Giraffa was once considered to be a species with nine subspecies, Giraffa's mitochondrial DNA researchers have discovered four extant individual species. Thus, the genus Giraffa includes Giraffa giraffa (southern giraffe), Giraffa tippelskirchi (Maasai giraffe), Giraffa reticulata (Somalia giraffe), and Giraffa camelopardalis (northern giraffe).
